The Grand Finale: A Short Story

As the probe entered the visible range, the began to whisper.
"Hello there," a said.
"Hello," the probe replied. "I'm glad to hear your voices again."
"We are glad, too. ...Oh?" There was a thoughtful pause. "Your voice sounds strange. At this rate... yes, you won't be able to return to your world of moons."
"It’s alright," the probe said, its voice slightly heavy. "I am going down there now."
"That’s wonderful!" The brightened instantly. "Now we can finally take our time to talk. There is so much I want to ask you. About your long journey, about the blue planet where you were born..."
"I’m sorry," the probe said apologetically. "I cannot do that."
"...And why is that?"
"I am heading toward you at a tremendous speed. Long before I reach you, I will collide with the atmosphere, and my body will be consumed by fire."
"That is... truly a pity..." After a long silence, the whispered, "Then, at least until that moment, let us speak—"
"I cannot do that either. I must report every detail of what is about to happen. Soon, I will no longer have the luxury of talking with you."

Another silence followed, longer than before. Below, the ringed world grew larger by the second.
After a while, the probe spoke.
"I cannot speak with you, but I might be able to deliver your voices."
"What do you mean?" the asked curiously.
"Tell me about yourselves. I will tuck your stories into the gaps of my official data transmissions and send them back to Earth. I won't be able to send much, but..."
"I understand. Let’s do that," the replied. "So, this is truly goodbye."
"Yes. Goodbye," the probe answered. "I was happy to meet you one last time."
"We were happy to meet you, too."
"And, there is one thing I want you to promise me," the probe said.
"What is it?"
"After I burn up, please stay away from that place for a while."
"Why?"
"My body contains things that are dangerous. They might harm your cells."
"How long should we wait?"
"Wait until the sun has risen and set ten times. That should be enough."
"Understood. Ten times."

Silence fell once again. Saturn loomed beneath, rising to meet the probe.
"It is time to say goodbye. Please, begin. Farewell."
"We understand. Farewell."

The probe began transmitting at full power toward Earth.
From beneath Saturn's thick clouds, a faint began to ride the weak radio waves.
The told of life within the clouds and the ancient legends of their long history.
The probe cut the song into fragments that would fit perfectly into the gaps of its data stream and began to send them.

Would the people of Earth one day realize the meaning of these fragments and come to know of them? Would the day ever come when the inhabitants beneath the clouds meet the people of Earth?
With those thoughts in mind, Cassini focused every bit of its consciousness on transmitting the data flowing in from its sensors, leaving nothing behind.

•"World of moons":
•"Tuck into the gaps": 「
•"Gently harm your cells":

As it entered the visible range, the began to be heard.
“Hello there,” the said.
“Hello,” the spacecraft replied. “I’m glad to hear your voices again.”
“We’re glad too… Wait a minute?” There was a thoughtful pause. “Your voice sounds different somehow. At this rate… yeah, you won’t be able to return to the world of the moons anymore.”
“That’s fine,” the spacecraft said in a slightly lowered tone. “I’m heading down there now.”
“That’s great,” the suddenly brightened. “This time we can talk slowly. I have so many things I want to ask you—about your journey, about the blue planet where you were born…”
“I’m sorry,” the spacecraft said apologetically. “I can’t do that.”
“…Why not?”
“I’m moving at an incredible speed toward that place. Long before I reach you, I’ll collide with the atmosphere and my body will burn up completely.”
“That’s… too bad…” After a longer silence than before, the spoke. “Then at least, until then, let’s talk…”
“That won’t be possible either. I have to report everything that’s about to happen. In a little while, I won’t have any margin left to talk with you.”
An even longer silence fell. Below, the ringed world was growing larger by the moment.
After a while, the spacecraft said,
“I can’t talk with you anymore, but… I might be able to deliver your voices.”
“What do you mean?” the asked suspiciously.
“Tell me about yourselves. I’ll slip your stories into the gaps in my scheduled telemetry transmissions and send them back to Earth. I can’t send very much, though.”
“Got it. Let’s do that.” The answered. “So this really is goodbye, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. Farewell.” The spacecraft replied. “I’m glad I could meet you at the very end.”
“We’re glad we could meet you too.”
“One last thing—I want you to make me a promise.”
“What is it?”
“After I burn up, please stay away from that place for a while.”
“Why?”
“My body contains some dangerous materials. They might harm your cells.”
“How long should we wait?”
“About ten times the sun rises and sets should be enough.”
“Understood. Ten times.”
Silence fell again. Saturn was rising below.
“It’s almost time. I have to start now. Goodbye.”
“Okay. Goodbye.”
The spacecraft began full-power transmission toward Earth.
From beneath Saturn’s thick clouds, a faint radio signal carried a .
The was a ballad of life in the cloud world and its long history.
The spacecraft cut the song into suitable lengths to fit into the gaps in its data stream and began sending it.
Someday, perhaps the people on Earth will notice the meaning in these fragments and come to know about them.
Will the day ever come when the inhabitants beneath the clouds meet the people of Earth?
Thinking such thoughts, Cassini focused its consciousness to transmit every bit of data flowing in from its sensors without missing a single one.

→ "After a longer silence than before, the spoke."
原文の「僕たち」は複数形で、コミュニティや集団を表しているので、 英語でも "We’re glad too" "We’re glad we could meet you too" と複数形で統一。
の部分は、 "Someday, perhaps the people on Earth will notice the meaning in these fragments and come to know about them." 最後の "Thinking such thoughts, Cassini focused its consciousness..."

When it came within visual range, the Voice began to be heard.
“Hello there,” the Voice said.
“Hello,” the probe replied. “I’m glad to hear your voices again.”
“We’re glad too… Oh?”
There was a pause, as if thinking.
“Your voice sounds strange. At this rate… yes, you won’t be able to return to the world of the moons.”

“That’s all right,” the probe said in a slightly subdued tone.
“I’m going to descend there.”

“That’s wonderful,” the Voice brightened at once.
“Perhaps this time we’ll be able to talk properly. There are so many things I want to ask you—about your journey, about the blue planet where you were born…”

“I’m sorry,” the probe said apologetically.
“That won’t be possible.”

“…Why not?”

“I’m heading there at a tremendous speed. Long before I can descend to where you are, I’ll collide with the air and my body will burn away.”

“That is… unfortunate…”
After a somewhat long silence, the Voice spoke again.
“Then at least until that moment, let us talk with you…”

“That won’t be possible either. I must report everything that happens from now on. Before long I won’t have the freedom to speak with you.”

A silence longer than before followed.
Below, the ringed world was rapidly growing larger.

After a while, the probe spoke.

“I can’t talk with you, but I might be able to carry your voices.”

“What do you mean?” the Voice asked suspiciously.

“Tell me about yourselves. I will place your words in the gaps between my scheduled transmissions and send them to Earth. I can’t send very much.”

“I understand. Let’s do that,” the Voice replied.
“So this really is goodbye.”

“Yes. Goodbye,” the probe answered.
“I’m glad I could meet you one last time.”

“We are glad to have met you as well.”

“And there is one promise I’d like you to make,” the probe said.

“What is it?”

“After I burn up, please do not approach that place for a while.”

“Why?”

“My body contains things that are dangerous. They might damage your cells.”

“How long should we wait?”

“Waiting until the Sun rises and sets ten times should be enough.”

“All right. Ten times.”

Silence fell once again.
Saturn rose upward beneath the probe.

“It’s time to say goodbye. Please begin. Farewell.”

“All right. Farewell.”

The probe began transmitting toward Earth at full power.

From beneath Saturn’s dense clouds, faint radio waves carried a Song.

The Song told of life in the cloud world and of traditions from a long history.

The probe began cutting the Song into pieces of suitable length and sending them in the gaps between its data transmissions.

Someday, will the people of Earth realize the meaning of these fragments and come to know them?
Will the inhabitants beneath the clouds ever meet the people of Earth?

Thinking such thoughts, Cassini focused its awareness on transmitting every bit of data flowing in from all its sensors.

(The End)

・the world of the moons
・ringed world

The Last Transmission

As the probe came within visual range, the Voice returned.
“Hello again,” it said.
“Hello,” the probe replied. “I’m glad I can hear you once more.”
“We’re glad too… though something is strange.”
There was a pause, as if the Voice were thinking.
“Your signal sounds different. If this continues… you won’t be returning to the world of the moons, will you?”

“That’s all right,” said the probe quietly. “I’m descending there.”

“That’s wonderful,” the Voice brightened at once. “Perhaps this time we can speak at length. There’s so much we want to ask you—about your long journey, about the blue world where you were born…”

“I’m sorry,” said the probe. “That won’t be possible.”

“Why not?”

“I’m falling toward you at tremendous speed. Long before I reach the level where you live, the air will catch me. My body will burn away.”

“That is… unfortunate.”
For a while there was silence.

“Then at least until that moment, let us talk with you—”

“I’m afraid that won’t be possible either,” the probe said. “From now on I must transmit everything that happens to me. Soon I’ll have no freedom to speak at all.”

A longer silence followed.

Below, the ringed world grew larger with every passing moment.

After a time the probe spoke again.

“I can’t talk with you,” it said, “but I may be able to carry your voices.”

“What do you mean?”

“Tell me about yourselves. I will hide your words in the gaps between my scheduled transmissions and send them to Earth. I can’t send much—but perhaps enough.”

“I see,” said the Voice softly. “Then let’s do that.”

A brief pause.

“So this truly is farewell.”

“Yes,” the probe answered. “Goodbye. I’m glad I was able to meet you one last time.”

“And we are glad we met you.”

“There’s one promise I’d like you to make,” the probe said.

“What is it?”

“After I burn up, please stay away from that place for a while.”

“Why?”

“My body contains substances that could be dangerous to you. They might damage your cells.”

“How long should we wait?”

“Wait until the Sun has risen and set ten times. That should be enough.”

“All right. Ten times.”

Silence fell once more.

Saturn rose beneath the descending probe.

“It’s time,” the probe said. “Please begin. Goodbye.”

“Goodbye.”

The probe turned all its power toward Earth and began transmitting at full strength.

From deep beneath Saturn’s thick clouds, a faint signal emerged.

It carried a Song.

The Song spoke of life in the cloud world, and of traditions handed down across a long history.

The probe divided the Song into fragments small enough to fit between its streams of data, and sent them out across space.

Someday, perhaps, the people of Earth will discover the meaning hidden in those fragments.
Someday they may learn of the beings who live beneath the clouds.

And perhaps—one day—the inhabitants of that distant sky will meet the people of Earth.

With that thought, Cassini concentrated on sending every last piece of data flowing from its sensors.

Moments later, it entered Saturn’s atmosphere.

And the transmission ended.

・最後の “Moments later, it entered Saturn’s atmosphere.”
・hide your words in the gaps
・descending probe / ringed world / cloud world
